Frequency Annually / As Needed
Duration 3–4 hours

What is Ashta Naga Pooja?

Ashta Naga Pooja is the comprehensive worship of the eight principal Naga deities (Ashta = eight, Naga = divine serpent) who govern different realms of cosmic and earthly life. Each of the eight Nagas presides over a specific domain of blessings and carries the power to resolve specific forms of Sarpa Dosha. When all eight are worshipped together in a single ceremony, the total power of the Naga realm descends upon the devotee, dissolving all serpent-related afflictions and opening pathways of divine grace.

The Eight Sacred Nagas

Ananta (Shesha Naga)

The infinite serpent who supports Lord Vishnu and sustains the universe. Worshipped for stability, longevity, and protection of the household.

Vasuki

The great Naga used to churn the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan). Worshipped for victory over adversities, spiritual merit, and auspiciousness.

Takshaka

The swift, powerful Naga of the forest. Invoked for protection from sudden calamities, accidents, and removal of deeply embedded karmic debts.

Karkotaka

Known for his potent poison that grants supernatural power. Worshipped for courage, overcoming enemies, and liberation from poison-related afflictions.

Padma

The lotus Naga associated with wealth and prosperity. Invoked for financial abundance, business success, and the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi.

Mahapadma

The great lotus Naga, guardian of immense treasures. Worshipped for wealth beyond measure and removal of extreme poverty and financial blockages.

Shankha

The conch-form Naga associated with divine sound and purity. Worshipped for spiritual progress, mental clarity, and purification of the household.

Kulika

The family-lineage Naga who guards ancestral memory and karmic inheritance. Invoked to resolve generational Sarpa Dosha and ancestral debts.

The Eight Cosmic Serpents

The Naga Pantheon

The Ashta Nagas are described in the Mahabharata, the Puranas, and the Atharva Veda as the foremost among the Naga tribe—divine serpent beings who inhabit the celestial realm of Patala and serve as guardians of the earth’s sacred energies. They are not ordinary serpents but cosmic beings of immense spiritual power, each representing a different quality of divine protection.

In Kerala’s tantric tradition, the Ashta Naga Pooja is considered one of the most comprehensive remedies for all forms of Sarpa Dosha and Naga Shapa (serpent curse). At Sree Pulikkal Vishwanagayakshi Temple, this pooja is performed with individual shrines dedicated to each of the eight Nagas, ensuring that each deity receives complete and authentic worship.

“Ananta, Vasuki, Shesha, Padmanabha, Kambala, Shankha-Pala, Dhritarashtra, Takshaka, Kaliya—May these Naga kings protect me always.”

— Naga Stotra, Mahabharata (Adi Parva)

How the Ritual Unfolds

Individual Worship of Each Naga

The priest performs individual abhishekam (sacred bathing), alankara (decoration), and naivedyam (food offering) for each of the eight Naga deities in sequence. Each Naga receives offerings specific to their nature—Ananta receives white flowers, Vasuki receives sandalwood, Takshaka receives red flowers, and so on—ensuring that each deity is fully honored and propitiated.

Ashta Naga Archana & Mantra Japa

The ceremony includes the recitation of the Ashta Naga Ashtottara (108 names of each Naga deity), followed by specific mantra japa targeting the devotee’s particular Sarpa Dosha. The ritual concludes with the Naga Mangalashtakam (eight auspicious verses for the Nagas) recited over the devotee to seal the blessings of all eight divine serpents.
