Temple Protocols
Sacred purity guidelines to be observed before visiting the temple
The divine presence at Sree Pulikkal Vishwanagayakshi Temple is maintained through strict adherence to traditional purity observances. These are not mere customs — they are sacred protocols established by our ancestors to preserve the spiritual potency of the rituals and ensure that devotees receive the full blessings of the Naga deities. Please read and follow these guidelines before planning your visit or participating in any pooja.
Alcohol & Intoxicants
Do not consume alcohol or any intoxicating substance before visiting the temple.
Entering the sacred premises under the influence of alcohol or intoxicants is strictly prohibited. Such substances disturb the mind and body, making one spiritually impure and unfit for divine darshan. Please ensure you are completely sober before entering the temple compound.
Menstrual Cycle
During the menstrual period and for 7 days thereafter, ladies should not visit the temple. From the 8th day, one may come.
This observance is rooted in the traditional understanding of the body’s energy cycles. The first 7 days of the cycle are considered a period of rest and internal purification. From the 8th day onward, a lady is considered ritually pure and is welcome to visit the temple and participate in all poojas.
Death in the Family
After a death in the family, do not visit the temple for 14 days.
When a death occurs in the immediate family, the household observes a mourning period of 14 days. During this time, family members are in a state of ritual impurity (ashaucha) and should refrain from temple visits and participation in poojas. After the 14-day period and the completion of prescribed mourning rites, one may return to the temple.
Non-Vegetarian Food
Do not visit the temple on the same day you have consumed non-vegetarian food.
The consumption of meat, fish, or eggs creates a state of ritual impurity that is incompatible with entering the sacred space of the Naga deities. On days you plan to visit the temple or participate in a pooja, please observe a purely vegetarian diet. This applies to the day of the visit.
A Note from Ambotti Thampuran
“These protocols are not meant to exclude anyone. They exist to protect the devotee’s own spiritual experience and to preserve the sanctity of this sacred space. When we approach the divine in a state of purity, the blessings flow freely and completely. We welcome every devotee with open arms — at the right time and in the right state of readiness.”
