Navagraha Homam

Sacred fire ritual to pacify the nine planets and remove karmic obstacles

Frequency As Needed
Duration 3–4 hours

What is Navagraha Homam?

Navagraha Homam is a powerful Vedic fire ritual performed to appease the nine planetary deities—Surya, Chandra, Mangala, Budha, Brihaspati, Shukra, Shani, Rahu, and Ketu. The positions of these planets at the time of birth profoundly influence every aspect of life, and adverse placements create doshas that manifest as obstacles, health issues, and relationship difficulties.

The Nine Planets & Their Influence

Surya, Chandra & Mangala

Sun governs authority, health, and vitality. Moon controls emotions and mental peace. Mars rules courage, energy, and property matters. Imbalances cause health deterioration, emotional instability, and land disputes.

Budha, Brihaspati & Shukra

Mercury governs communication, business, and intellect. Jupiter rules wisdom, progeny, and spiritual growth. Venus controls marriage, relationships, and wealth. Weak placements affect these areas adversely.

Shani, Rahu & Ketu

Saturn governs karma, discipline, and longevity. Rahu and Ketu are shadow planets creating Sarpa and Kala Sarpa doshas. These three are the most powerful sources of karmic obstacles and life disruptions.

The Vedic Basis

Navagraha Homam ritual fire

Fire as the Divine Intermediary

In Vedic tradition, Agni—the sacred fire—is considered the messenger between the human and divine realms. The Navagraha Homam channels offerings through Agni directly to the nine planetary deities, seeking their grace and pacification of malefic influences.

The ritual uses nine specific sacred woods (samidha), nine types of grains, and nine varieties of flowers corresponding to each planet. Special mantras from the Rigveda and Yajurveda are chanted for each graha in sequence, systematically addressing all planetary imbalances in one comprehensive ceremony.

“One who performs the Navagraha Homa with devotion shall be freed from all planetary afflictions, and the nine planets shall bestow their grace abundantly.”

— Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra

How the Ritual Addresses Specific Doshas

Shani Dosha (Saturn Affliction)

Saturn's adverse placement causes prolonged delays, health issues, financial setbacks, and career obstacles. The Shani component of the homam involves sesame seeds, iron offerings, and specific Shani mantras to reduce the planet's malefic influence and invoke its disciplined blessings.

Rahu–Ketu Dosha

Rahu and Ketu create the feared Kala Sarpa and Sarpa Doshas. Their afflictions manifest as sudden losses, inexplicable misfortunes, and spiritual disturbances. The Rahu-Ketu segment of the homam works in conjunction with the temple's primary Naga worship tradition, making this ceremony particularly potent here.

Who Should Perform Navagraha Homam?

Particularly beneficial for those experiencing these life situations

Career Obstacles

Repeated job loss, promotions blocked, business failures despite sincere effort — often rooted in planetary afflictions.

Chronic Health Issues

Long-standing unexplained health problems that do not respond fully to medical treatment often have planetary roots.

Delayed Marriage

Venus and Jupiter afflictions are common causes of marriage delays. Navagraha Homam addresses both simultaneously.

Financial Instability

Persistent debt, unexpected losses, inability to save despite earning — Mercury, Jupiter, and Saturn doshas are often responsible.

Sade Sati Period

Those undergoing the 7.5-year Saturn transit (Sade Sati) or Ashtama Shani benefit greatly from regular homam during this period.

Progeny Seekers

Jupiter rules children and progeny. Weak Jupiter combined with Rahu affliction is a common cause of childlessness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need my horoscope / birth chart?

Not mandatory, but highly recommended. Providing your date, time, and place of birth allows the priest to perform the sankalpa accurately and address specific planetary afflictions in your chart. If birth time is unknown, the sankalpa proceeds with available details.

Can this be done remotely or must I attend in person?

The homam can be performed on your behalf at the temple even if you cannot attend in person. You will receive photos/videos during the ceremony and prasadam by post. In-person participation is always welcome and recommended if possible.

How often should Navagraha Homam be performed?

We perform it during auspicious planetary periods. For acute doshas (such as Sade Sati or Rahu–Ketu transit), performing this homam multiple times in a year is recommended. For general maintenance, once or twice a year is beneficial.

Is this different from Ayilyam Pooja?

Yes. Ayilyam Pooja specifically addresses Sarpa/Naga Dosha through serpent deity worship. Navagraha Homam addresses the full spectrum of planetary afflictions through fire offerings. Both complement each other, and many devotees combine them.
