Frequency On Request
Duration 3–4 hours

What is Maha Guruthi Pooja?

Guruthi Pooja is a powerful tantric offering performed primarily for Goddess Bhadrakali—the fierce, war-ready form of Shakti who protects devotees from evil forces, fulfills fierce wishes, and grants victory over enemies. The ritual uses a sacred red preparation of turmeric and lime as a symbolic blood substitute (guruthi), preserving the spiritual potency of the ancient blood offering while maintaining the compassionate non-violent tradition of this temple.

The Three Sacred Offerings

Guruthi Pooja encompasses three interlinked forms of worship:

1. Guruthi Tharpanam

For: Bhadrakali Preethi (pleasing the fierce Goddess)
Purpose: Primary red-liquid offering poured into the sacred fire, invoking Kali’s acceptance and blessings

2. Valicha Pattu

For: Sung invocation of the Goddess
Purpose: Traditional ballad recitations that narrate Bhadrakali’s victories, used to invite her fierce energy into the ritual space

3. Kalam Pattu

For: Yantra worship of Bhadrakali
Purpose: Worship of the sacred floor diagram (kalam) drawn in colored powders, through which the deity is invoked in visible form

The Tradition of Maha Guruthi

Guruthi ritual preparation

Bhadrakali’s Sacred Drink

According to Kerala Tantric tradition, after Bhadrakali slew the demon Darika, she drank his blood to cool her fierce, battle-aroused state. To honor this victory and to invoke the same fierce protective power, devotees have offered blood or its ritual substitute—the Guruthi—to the Goddess for centuries.

At Sree Pulikkal Vishwanagayakshi Temple, the Guruthi is prepared from a sacred mixture of turmeric, lime juice, and sacred water, which turns a vivid red when combined—symbolizing the blood offering while maintaining the temple’s commitment to ahimsa (non-violence). This substitute carries the full spiritual potency of the original offering.

“Bhadrakali, who drank the blood of Darika, accepts the devotee’s Guruthi as the highest form of surrender. Through this offering, she becomes the protector of the devotee’s household.”

How the Ritual Unfolds

Preparation of the Kalam

The priest begins by drawing the sacred Bhadrakali Kalam—a detailed floor diagram in colored powders (rice powder, turmeric, charcoal, and vermilion) depicting the Goddess in her fierce form. This kalam becomes the living residence of Bhadrakali during the ritual. Its creation alone takes 1–2 hours and is accompanied by continuous mantra recitation.

The Guruthi Offering

Once the kalam is complete and the Goddess has been invoked through Valicha Pattu (devotional songs), the Guruthi preparation is offered in a large vessel placed before the kalam. The offering is poured ceremonially, with specific mantras, as the priest channels the devotee’s sankalpa (intention) into the offering.

After the offering is accepted, the kalam is dissolved in a specific ritual manner, and the sacred powders are distributed as prasadam. The ritual space is then cleansed and the Goddess is ceremonially bid farewell.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is actual blood used in Guruthi Pooja?

No. At Sree Pulikkal Vishwanagayakshi Temple, we follow the ahimsa (non-violent) tradition. The Guruthi is a sacred preparation of turmeric and lime juice which turns red—symbolizing the blood offering while maintaining complete non-violence. This substitute carries the same spiritual potency as the original offering.

What is the difference between Guruthi Pooja and Pratyangira Homam?

Guruthi Pooja is specifically for Goddess Bhadrakali and works through the power of her fierce, warrior energy. Pratyangira Homam involves a fire ritual invoking the lion-faced Goddess Pratyangira. Both offer protection, but Guruthi is more suited for devotees of Bhadrakali and for fulfilling specific vows, while Pratyangira Homam is specifically targeted at black magic and enemy afflictions.

Can women perform Guruthi Pooja?

Yes, women can participate in and benefit from Guruthi Pooja, subject to the standard temple purity protocols. Women should not attend during the menstrual period and for 7 days thereafter. From the 8th day onward, attendance is fully permitted.

How long does it take to see results?

Many devotees report a sense of immediate relief and mental peace following the ritual. For protection from enemies and dispute resolution, changes typically become visible within 40–90 days. For severe cases with a specific vow, a follow-up offering may be required if the wish is fulfilled.
