Kala Sarpa Shanti Homam

Sacred fire ritual to pacify Kala Sarpa Dosha and restore harmony to all planetary energies

Frequency As Needed
Duration 3–4 hours

What is Kala Sarpa Shanti Homam?

The Kala Sarpa Shanti Homam is a targeted fire ritual (homam) performed specifically to pacify the Kala Sarpa Dosha—the astrological condition where all seven planets are hemmed between the shadow planets Rahu and Ketu. Unlike the comprehensive annual Kala Sarpa Bali ceremony, this homam focuses on immediate pacification and creating a shield of protection for devotees who need ongoing relief from the effects of this powerful dosha. It is the recommended remedy for mild to moderate Kala Sarpa Dosha and serves as a regular maintenance practice for those undergoing the full Bali cycle.

Kala Sarpa Shanti vs. Kala Sarpa Bali

Understanding the difference helps you choose the right ritual:

Kala Sarpa Shanti Homam

For: Mild to moderate Kala Sarpa Dosha
Focus: Pacification through fire offerings, faster to perform, can be done multiple times per year for ongoing relief
Duration: 3–4 hours

Kala Sarpa Bali

For: Severe Kala Sarpa Dosha requiring full remediation
Focus: Complete annual ceremony with full-day ritual, deeper karmic resolution
Duration: Full day (sunrise to sunset)

The Shanti Tradition

Kala Sarpa Shanti Homam fire ritual

Fire as the Cosmic Pacifier

In Vedic tradition, fire (Agni) is the primary medium through which offerings reach the deities. The Shanti (peace-bringing) Homam draws upon the Vedic principle that specific fire oblations, accompanied by precise mantras, can neutralize adverse planetary energies. For Kala Sarpa Dosha, the homam uses oblations associated with Rahu and Ketu—blue flowers, sesame seeds, and specific herbs—offered with the Rahu-Ketu Shanti mantras to cool and pacify the shadow planets.

At Sree Pulikkal Vishwanagayakshi Temple, the Shanti Homam uniquely combines the Vedic fire ritual with Kerala’s Naga Tantra tradition, invoking the Naga deities—who are the mystical bodies of Rahu and Ketu—to intercede with the shadow planets on the devotee’s behalf. This dual approach makes the ritual significantly more potent than standard Rahu-Ketu Shanti performed at other temples.

“Through the sacred fire, through the power of the Nagas, through the grace of the Goddess—may the serpent of time release its grip and allow destiny to flow freely.”

— Kerala Tantra Shastra, Naga Remedies Section

The Homam Process

Rahu-Ketu Tharpanam (Water Offerings)

Before the fire ritual, the priest performs water offerings (tharpanam) to both Rahu and Ketu, acknowledging their cosmic role and seeking their cooperation. The devotee’s complete birth details, including the specific type of Kala Sarpa Dosha, are recited in the sankalpa.

The Shanti Fire Ritual

A sacred fire pit (homa kunda) is prepared and consecrated. Specific oblations for Rahu (blue sesame, kusha grass, black lentils) and Ketu (multi-colored sesame, kusa grass, horse gram) are offered in precise proportions, with 108 to 1,008 repetitions of the Rahu-Ketu Shanti mantra. The ritual concludes with a Naga abhishekam and distribution of the blessed fire ash as protective prasadam.
