Maha Pratyangira Homam

Sacred fire ritual invoking the supreme fierce Goddess Maha Pratyangira to destroy all negative forces and protect devotees

Frequency As Needed
Duration 4–5 hours

What is Maha Pratyangira Homam?

Pratyangira Homam is an extraordinarily powerful fire ritual performed to invoke Goddess Pratyangira—the fierce, lion-faced form of Shakti who destroys all forms of negative energy, black magic, evil eye, and enemy afflictions. This homam is among the most potent protective rituals in the Tantric tradition, capable of reversing curses and neutralizing even the most deeply rooted negative influences.

Three Dimensions of Protection

The homam addresses three distinct sources of negative influence:

1. Abhichara Nivarana

For: Black magic & tantric attacks
Purpose: To neutralize spells, hexes, and dark tantric workings directed against the devotee or their family

2. Drishti Dosha Removal

For: Evil eye & negative gaze
Purpose: To cleanse the aura of harmful energies cast through jealousy, envy, or ill-will from others

3. Shatru Nashana

For: Enemy afflictions & legal matters
Purpose: To protect against enemies, false accusations, court cases, and those who seek to cause harm

The Tradition of Maha Pratyangira

Goddess Pratyangira

The Fierce Protector Goddess

Goddess Maha Pratyangira is described in the Atharva Veda and Tantric scriptures as a form of supreme Shakti with a lion’s head and human body, blazing with thousand-armed radiance. She is said to have emerged when Lord Shiva took the form of Sharabha to subdue Narasimha, and Pratyangira arose from this cosmic encounter as the most powerful anti-dark force in creation.

At Sree Pulikkal Vishwanagayakshi Temple, the Pratyangira Homam is performed in the tradition of Kerala Tantra Shastra, combining the power of the Naga deities with the fierce energy of Pratyangira for maximum protective efficacy. The combination makes this one of the most effective remedies available in this region.

“She who is Pratyangira destroys all abhichara—all black arts directed against the devotee. There is no dark force that can withstand her lion’s roar.”

— Atharvana Veda, Tantric Commentary

The Homam Process

Sankalpa & Purification

The homam begins with a detailed sankalpa (sacred intention-setting) where the priest takes the devotee’s full name, nakshatra, gotra, and the specific affliction to be addressed. The ritual space is purified using sacred ash, turmeric water, and Naga mantras to create a protected ceremonial field.

The Sacred Fire Ritual

The fire pit (kunda) is consecrated with 108 names of Pratyangira while specific oblations—including sesame, black mustard, turmeric, and sacred herbs—are offered into the fire with each mantra. The priest performs 1,008 to 10,008 ahutis (fire offerings) depending on the severity of the affliction, calling upon Pratyangira to absorb and destroy all negative forces.

The ritual concludes with a protective kavacham (armor) being recited over the devotee, and sacred ash from the homam is given as prasadam for continued protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need Pratyangira Homam?

If you are experiencing sudden, unexplained misfortune; recurring nightmares or disturbed sleep; failing health despite medical treatment; business collapses; or if troubles started after a conflict with a specific person—these can be signs of negative influence. Contact Ambotti Thampuran for a consultation.

Can I perform this homam as a preventive measure?

Yes. Many devotees perform Pratyangira Homam once a year as a spiritual “cleanse” to remove accumulated negative energies and strengthen their protective aura, even without specific afflictions. It is accessible as a regular protective practice throughout the year.

Do I need to be present in person?

While physical presence is always preferred and more effective, the homam can be performed on your behalf with your name, nakshatra, and gotra. Sacred ash (vibhuti) and other prasadam will be dispatched to your address after the ritual.

How many sessions are needed?

For mild Drishti or evil eye issues, a single session is often sufficient. For long-standing black magic or severe afflictions, 3 consecutive sessions (one year of homams) are recommended for complete resolution.

What preparations should I make before attending?

Observe all temple protocols: no alcohol, no non-vegetarian food on the day, maintain purity guidelines. Wear traditional attire if attending in person. Bring details of your nakshatra and gotra. Arrive with a clear intention of what you wish to be protected from or resolved.
